One Interesting Trend That Means Big Growth for Aluminum

Aluminum Extrusion, Gabrian Blog

In recent years we’ve seen huge growth in the use of aluminum in manufacturing.

Aluminum extrusions have become a popular material choice for a number of reasons. Among them:

  • Aluminum has a higher strength-to-weight ratio than steel. Its weight is one-third the weight of steel.
  • It is flexible. Aluminum can deflect under loads and then spring back.
  • Aluminum is naturally non-corrosive. Applying additional coatings can strengthen its non-corrosiveness.
  • It is environmentally friendly. It can be recycled over and over again.

What Everybody Ought to Know About “Lightweighting”

Recently there has been a trend of “lightweighting” in the auto industry.

What is lightweighting?

Automakers are constantly trying to improve fuel efficiency and handling in their vehicles. One way to do this is by making cars lighter. They substitute materials that are heavy for lighter ones.

According to Radiant Insights, the aluminum extrusion market is expected to see a 7% growth rate in the coming years. One of the key reasons for this is the auto industry.

Using aluminum in place of steel is one of the key ways to make cars lighter.

3 Cars That Have Shed a Remarkable Amount of Weight

By using aluminum in their redesigns, these cars have really shed some pounds.

#1 Land Rover Range Rover

In 2013 Land Rover redesigned their Range Rover with an eye on weight savings. They were able to make a body that was 39 percent lighter than the previous steel body. The car shed over 700 pounds.

#2 Audi Q7

In the 2015 version of the car, Audi shed 716 pounds from the Q7 SUV. Its body is made from a mix of high strength steel and aluminum. Aluminum is also used in the doors, fenders, hood and rear hatch.

#3 Ford F150

The 2016 model of the F150 pickup truck is stronger and more efficient than ever. It’s aluminum alloy body and steel frame make it up to 700 pounds lighter. That means better fuel economy and the ability to haul more stuff.

It’s Not Just the Auto Industry Using Aluminum Extrusions

The largest end users of aluminum extrusions are in the building and construction industry.

Extrusions can be used in doors and windows. They are in panels and window frames. They are also found in ladders and bridges. They play an important role in constructing solar panels too.
